Regarding the belt replacement cycle of diesel generator sets:
If the fan belt of the diesel generator set is too loose, it will slip, causing the fan and water pump speed to decrease, which will affect the heat dissipation performance of the generator set; while being too tight will also increase the wear of the shaft and bearings. Therefore, the fan belt of the diesel generator set must maintain normal tightness to ensure the normal operation of the cooling system.
1. Adjustment of fan belt tightness
How to adjust the fan belt to ensure the appropriate tightness of the diesel generator set?
Press or pull up the middle part of the belt with a force of 30-50 Newtons. If the belt is 15-20 mm different from its original position, the tightness of the belt is considered normal, otherwise it should be adjusted. The methods are divided into three types according to different structures:
(1) Equipped with a tensioning wheel structure. You can loosen the fixing nut, turn the adjusting screw, and move the tensioning wheel up and down to achieve the required tightness;
(2) The fan and generator are driven by a common belt, and the generator bracket can be moved to change the position of the pulley to achieve the required tightness;
(3) The pulley is composed of two halves. First loosen the fixing bolt, and then rotate the adjustable half pulley to change the width of the resulting pulley, thereby raising or lowering the V-belt to achieve the required tightness.
When the water tank temperature of the unit remains high, it should be stopped for inspection and the tightness of the fan belt should be adjusted; seriously worn or broken fan belts should be replaced in time. In addition, if your diesel generator fan belt has two, they must be replaced at the same time to avoid uneven tightness, resulting in uneven force and unit failure.
1. Loosen the large locking nut on the fan hub or the screws that secure the fan hub to the mounting bracket. The fan hub will be offset after these tasks are completed.
2. Turn the adjustment screw to increase the belt tension.
3. Tighten the locking nuts or screws until the fan hub is aligned. Tighten the nuts to maintain proper alignment of the fan carrier and fan hub bracket.
Note: Do not use the adjustment screw to fully adjust the fan belt tension, as this may cause over-tightening.
4. The belt tension reading on the tension meter used should be as shown in Table 2-1.
5. Tighten the lock nut on the NH/NT engine to 400-450 feet. Pounds [542-610 N·m]; then, loosen back 1/2 turn. Tighten the four 1/2" screws to 75-85 ft. lbs [101-115 N·m] on the NTC-350FFC engine. On the V-903 engine, tighten the screws to 75 ft.-lbs [ 101 N·m] or tighten the single nut to 450 ft. lbs [10 N·m].
6. Recheck the belt tension.
7. Loosen the adjustment screw half a turn to prevent damage.
The operation of the diesel generator set is inseparable from the transmission belt. The belt plays a great role, so when a problem occurs, it should be replaced in time, otherwise the diesel generator set may be shut down. So, under what circumstances should the belt be replaced immediately?
1. When cracks appear in the base layer of the belt of the diesel generator set (that is, cracks appear on the belt, the core is broken, and the groove section is cracked);
2. The base layer and groove section of the diesel generator belt are separated; the base is worn and cracked; the pull rope is loose;
3. Serious wear on the side (i.e. loose wires, damage to the side material, hardening of the side, slippery side, cracks on the upper surface);
4. There is no gap between the inner diameter of the belt groove section of the diesel generator set and the bottom of the pulley groove.
