1. Structure of alternator/ generator
An alternator generally consists of four parts: a rotor, a stator, a rectifier, and an end cover.
2. Principle of AC power generation
1). Inside the generator there is a rotor (rotating magnetic field) driven by the engine
2). There is a stator winding outside the magnetic field. The winding has 3 sets of coils (3-phase windings). The 3-phase windings are 120 degrees apart from each other.
3). When the rotor rotates, the rotating magnetic field causes the fixed armature winding to cut the magnetic lines of force (or change the magnetic flux passing through the armature winding) to generate an electromotive force.
3. Rectification principle of alternator/ generator
In the three-phase winding of the alternator stator, the AC generated by induction is converted into DC by a three-phase bridge rectifier circuit composed of six diodes.
The diode has single conductivity. When a forward voltage is applied to the diode, the diode conducts. When a reverse voltage is applied to the diode, the diode turns off.
